Repair or replace? Our honest rule of thumb
Under 6 years old
Usually worth repairing — elements and thermostats are inexpensive and quick to swap.
Rust in the hot water
Brown water from the hot tap means the tank is corroding inside. Replacement is the safe call.
Trips the moment it heats
Often a leaking element shorting to earth. Repairable if caught early, before the tank is damaged.
No earth wire at all
Common in older bathrooms. Whatever else we do, we will not leave a heater unearthed.
Cold showers are optional
